A little about styles of dance...

Ballet serves as a backbone for all other styles of dance, as all other dance genres are based on ballet. Ballet is based on techniques that have been developed over centuries. Ballet uses music and dance to tell stories. For the more serious ballet dancers, we also offer Advanced Ballet and Pointe. Common ballet class practices include barre work, across the floor, center work, stretching, and choreography.

Jazz is a fun and "sassy" dance style that relies heavily on originality and expression of movement. Jazz dancing often uses bold, dramatic body movements, including body isolations and contractions. Common jazz class practices include cardio based warm-ups, stretching, across the floor learps and turns, center work, and choreography.

Tap dancing is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. Common tap class practices include a warm up, defining sounds work, across the floor, and choreography.

Hip-hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip-hop music, that evolved from the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop includes various moves such as breaking, popping, locking and krumping, and even house dance. Improvisation and personal interpretation are essential to hip-hop dancing. This is a high energy class that does not stop the whole time! Common hip-hop practices include a cardio based warm up, stretching, working on balance, power and tricks, and choreography.

Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques and is a "cousin" to those styles. Lyrical dancing is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements to express strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics in the chosen song. Because lyrical dancing focuses on the expression of strong emotion, the style concentrates more on individual approach and expressiveness than the precision of the dancer's movements. Common lyrical practices include a warm up, stretching, working on ballet technique, leaps, turns, and choreography.

Acro dance is a form that includes acrobatic movements. The gymnastic technique that acrobatic dancers can incorporate into a dance routine include handstands, cartwheels, and handsprings. While acrobatics or gymnastics are not forms of dance, they can become dance techniques if the dancer adds rhythm in time to the music with true dance steps. Common Acro practices include warm up, stretching, cartwheels, forward and backward rolls, bridges, hand stands, elbow balances, and much, much more!
